Module 3 – Sharpening Sickle Scalers
In sharpening Sickle Scalers, hygienists realize less pain and injury comes from properly sharpening their sickle scaler instruments, and how using properly sharpened instruments provides the best care to themselves and their patients.
Objectives
- Articulate, understand and draw the shape of a Sickle Scaler in cross-section
- Identify an improperly sharpened Sickle Scaler
- When assessing a Sickle Scaler, be able to understand how it has been improperly sharpened
- Demonstrate and be competent at correcting an improperly sharpened Sickle Scaler
- Articulate why it is important to use a sharp instrument
- Articulate the cause and effect of using dull and improperly sharpened instruments
- Demonstrate how to sharpen a Sickle Scaler to maintain its original design, by using DH Cubed’s approach
Requirements
- Sickle Scaler (We will be using the Hu-Freidy NEVI 49 for demonstration)
- Sharpening stone
- Sharpening test stick
- Loupes (recommended)
- Good lighting, gloves, mask, lab coat, 2×2 gauze
- An ErgoSharp device
